Boomkat Product Review:
Darren Hayman’s distinctive voice has been haunting my mind for many years now, and it’s always a pleasure when a Hefner record comes rolling into the office. This particular one is compiled from a Peel Session at Maida Vale, notable for the fact that it is one of two occasions when Hefner was expanded to an 8-piece band. Hayman and his merry followers proceed to bash out tracks from 2000s ‘We Love the City Album’ and more, with saxophone, trumpet and trombone fleshing them out into rather large sounding epics rather than the usual homespun personal gems you’d expect from Hefner. It’s all held together as ever though by Hayman’s cracking narratives, a perfect reflection of British life in the 90s to me, loves and losses without that smirking pseudo-irony we had thrust down our throats from so many bands of the Brit-pop era. Fans of the band will no doubt snap this up without delay, but it’s also a darn good starting place for this crucial British act.
