This new project is the brainchild of American Analog Set frontman and songwriter Andrew Kenny. Anyone familiar with that band's recordings or Kenny's split LP with Death Cab For Cutie's Ben Gibbard will instantly find themselves at home with these pared down musings. Despite some notable assistance from a number of hired hands (including Lymbic System drummer Michael Bell and vocalist, guitarist and AmAnSet contributor Leslie Sisson) Magnolia has all the intimacy of a solo album. The chiefly acoustic instrumentation avoids adherence to overly familiar singer-songwriter stylings, often sounding as if you're listening to unplugged versions of songs that were written for electrified instruments. 'The Other One' could have been a bit of an epic had Kenny hooked himself up to decent sized amplifier, its muted chords hinting at something far grander whilst "do-do-do" vocals stand in for what could so easily have been a lift-off chorus. Elsewhere, simple yet effective recordings like 'Hometown Fantasy' and 'Sugar' bring to mind Sufjan Stevens in their re-reading of modern indie-folk, while something like 'Seven Seventeen' feels like a collision of krautrock and country. It's safe to say that the songwriting on Magnolia is very specific to Kenny and you really can't imagine anyone else making a record quite like this...
