Revered and restlessly active sound artist Christina Kubisch presents two longform pieces created from recordings of electromagnetic fields at international airports and inside airplanes. 'Magnetic Flights' uses sounds recorded with the aid of special sensitive wireless headphones, developed and constructed by herself and engineer Manfred Fox, which detect and amplify overground and underground electromagnetic fields and makes them audible. As she states "The sounds are much more musical than one could expect. There are complex layers of high and low frequencies, loops of rhythmic sequences, groups of tiny signals, long drones and many things which change constantly and are hard to describe." The sounds were captured at various airports and on flights between Bucharest, Manchester, Munich, Seoul, Berlin, Milan, Chicago and London and have not been altered electronically or changed any other way apart from the use of the DINR filtering programme on a part. Over their duration you're hearing the changes in radiation due to departure and arrival, possibly altered by radio waves, communication signals, internet and atmospheric disturbances. A completely fascinating and immersive release. Highly recommended!
