Boomkat Product Review:
Though not exactly giving the listener an easy ride, Extra Life's Made Flesh is undoubtedly a highly original work. The brainchild of New York artist Charlie Looker - a man who has collaborated with everyone from Glenn Branca to Dirty Projectors - Extra Life references medieval music, modernist folk-pop, hardcore and often brings to mind the kind of angular experimentation you'd associate with Einsturzende Neubauten. The galloping drama of 'Voluptuous Life' seems to bring all these elements together in a single, restless blast, with jumpy guitars, glossy, arpeggiating synths and plainly put, unaffected vocals all piling in for the assault. 'The Ladder' does a good job of resolving those old foes punk and prog by smashing together brash, distorted guitars and hammer-like beats with complex, segmented passages. 'Black Hoodie' is a rare moment of unqualified prettiness that shows just how accomplished a composer Looker can be when he's willing to drop the dirge, but don't get used to it, readers, Extra Life is all about taking the listener outside comfort zones.
