Boomkat Product Review:
An ideal portal into the magnificently bizarre universe of Finnish electronic pioneer Pekka Airaksinen, this collection is brimming with surreal tape collages and primordial drum machine experiments. Airaksinen was always a figure on the periphery of the Finnish avant-garde, a fact compounded by his membership of art rock provocateurs The Sperm during the 1960s. Since then he's worked as an electroacoustic composer, becoming something of a cult figure in his homeland whilst being almost entirely unknown elsewhere. Nurse With Wound's Stephen Stapleton was an early champion of Airaksinen's music, so it's entirely fitting that he should show up on this compilation as a remixer. In fact the album is sequenced as a selection of original Airaksinen works, each complimented by remixes from a host of notable, often contemporary musicians. In addition to a variety of Finnish contributors (including Fonal's Es), Mira Calix and Curd Duca turn in reinterpretations, with Airaksinen himself even acting as remixer on the noise miniature 'Organ'. A real curiosity this one, and not the kindof revelation you'd get from a Delia Derbyshire or Daphne Oram type figure. Airaksinen is clearly an underground figure, a maverick who went against the grain of the great electroacousticians of his age, and is all the more entertaining for that.
