Boomkat Product Review:
'Lux' is the third album from techno/electronica charm Alex Smoke. It develops on his subtly dynamic and widely scoped styles of old with impressively refreshed production values applied to his canny balance of dark and light, or melancholia and elation. Smoke obviously has big ears as we can hear a number of influences at play here, from the Dettmann-debted dry grind of 'Paracelsus' to odder Chicago escapades on 'Pilk' or the EBM push of 'Blingkered', but it's when he leaves the dancefloor that we get some of his more interesting episodes. 'Northwoods' harks back to LP5 era Autechre, 'Master Of Tomorrow' is a truly killer slowfast sci-fi hiphop vision and 'Physic' clearly demonstrates that he's advanced his sound way beyond 'Paradolia'. With this album he remains one of the UK's finest electronic music producers.
