Boomkat Product Review:
Bristol bassbin worriers Kahn & Neek dance on the bones of classic dubstep and grime in a first duo LP marking 10 years of seismic tremors, featuring Flowdan & Riko Dan, Killa P, Franco Franco, Rider Shafique, Mez and more
A decade since their debut, ‘Backchat / Hotline’ (2012), Kahn & Neek play to a now-classic conception of UK rudeness with lurching halfstep rhythms underlining an armoury of MCs and interspersed by mood-enhancing atmospheric instrumentals. It displays immaculately produced aspects of mid ‘00s dread and dank pressure that signalled Kahn & Neek's home city Bristol as an epicentre of the OG dubstep sound, and a dank cousin of London-born grime.
There are canny flashes of contemporary inspiration from drill and the kind of rufige coming from the NNT/Hakuna Kulala cosmos embedded in its make-up too, melded with Burial, The Bug or Massive Attack-like barometrics for a vintage, noirish c.21st soundtrack for nocturnal diversions.
