Boomkat Product Review:
I didn't like the Gotan Project's last single 'Differente' some of you may have read the review... I didn't like it at all. This album tries it's best but sadly I haven't changed my opinion on the band, and even a guest appearance from the lovely Calexico doesn't help. Their blatant take on world music, fusing modern dancefloor production with airy ethnic sounds and vocals does very little for me, and comes across really as a very half-arsed take on what Jazzanova were doing back in the mid-1990s. There's something safe about the whole affair really, not necessarily in sound, but in the resounding mood, the lite vibe. The album's highlight is the closing track 'Paris, Texas' which is clearly named after one of my favourite films, the track isn't bad at all - but when you compare it to Ry Cooder's breathtaking original soundtrack, it pales.
