Boomkat Product Review:
A side-project setup by Vampire Weekend keyboardist/producer Rostam Batmanglij and Wes Miles of Ra Ra Riot, Discovery takes a more electronic slant on the sort of affable indie rock sounds the pair apply to their main bands. The resultant electro confection blends the brittle pop constructions of Junior Boys with the Postal Service's school of songwriting, with a decent measure of 808s & Heartbreak thrown in, and probably - if only by implication - a slight hint of the Daft Punk punk album with which the band share a name. During 'Orange Shirt' there's always a slight worry that Akon might start singing at any point, but once you're acclimatised to the zingy synths and glossed-up papery beats there's a lot to like here. 'Osaka Loop Line' proves especially successful, though inevitably courts comparison with the Gibbard/Tamborello oeuvre. 'I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend' features some guest vocals from the very popular Angel Deradoorian of Dirty Projectors, adding her waifish R&B intonations to the prep school crunk vibes. Another guest spot comes courtesy of Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig, who brings some extra character to 'Carby'. Add to all this an incredibly timely vocoded cover of the Jackson 5's 'I Want You Back' and you've got a quintessentially of-the-moment pop record.
