Boomkat Product Review:
Interesting collaborations are usually ones between artists who you assume might not have otherwise worked together. Metallica and Lou Reed for example, you all likely hated it, but it was interesting that’s for certain. ‘Love This Giant’ pairs up Talking Heads frontman David Byrne with indie darling St. Vincent, and while it might not be the most unusual meeting of minds the results are particularly unexpected. Using a horn section to set the tone of the record this is a pop long player unlike most pop long players, with flourishes of brass adorning chunky electronic percussion and the two musician’s unmistakable vocals. The most astounding part of the album is just how well Byrne and Annie Clark’s vocals work together, and while Byrne takes ‘lead’ duties, Clark’s restraint results in her popping up on the most startling moments. In recent years pop music might have lost the ability to surprise, but ‘Love This Giant’ is not the record many were likely expecting, and in that is far more powerful than it was ever supposed to be.
