Boomkat Product Review:
Love them or hate them, the great thing about Ipecac is that they clearly have the balls to do exactly what they want, and neither you (nor I) can do a damn thing about it. This debut album from Qui is sure to polarize listeners, but I can safely say that if you're a David Yow fanboy (come on Jesus Lizard listeners, I know you're out there) then 'Love's Miracle' will be like nectar to dehydrated ears. The band was formed in 2000 by Paul Christensen and Matt Cronk, but the attention really diverted to them when legendary drunk Yow joined in 2006, pushing them into the mainstream press. A skronking, rollicking blues-rock mashup from start to finish, Yow is on fine form dropping casual jokes and obscenities in randomly (he has a peculiar sense of humour) and the band are quite obviously taking a whole chunk and a half of influence from the dual deities of Beefheart and Zappa. That's no bad thing though, and listening to this only reminds me how infrequently I get to hear records that can take on Zappa and come out smiling - leave it to David Yow and co, right? As I said before it's not a record that will appeal to everyone out there, but take it from me - turn it up loud and take a good, hard sip of bourbon and you'll be laughing. You might end up in the clink, but you'll be laughing all the same. Miraculous.
