Boomkat Product Review:
Ari Up’s posthumous New Age Steppers album comes back around just over a decade since she passed, packing dancehall and bashment production from Adrian Sherwood and including a cut of dutty German lingo. Notable for bringing together musicians from the post-punk and reggae scenes together, their records feature contributions from members of The Pop Group, The Raincoats, Flying Lizards, Roots Radics, Aswad and Creation Rebel.
‘Love Forever’ features the influential singer of The Slits’ in fine fettle on a batch of contemporary dancehall / bashment and other oddities that were finished up posthumously by Adrian Sherwood. The 11 trax play up to Ari and Adrian’s mutual thing for all manner of post-punk and dancehall styles that they’ve pursued since the earliest New Age Steppers records in 1983, oscillating the rudely bashy rub ’n tug of ‘Conquer’ and ‘Musical terrorist’ with the coiled post-punk steppers bassline and yelps of ’My Nerves’, and taking in a daft bit of German language reggae with potty lyrics in ‘The Scheisse Song,’ and saving their stranger energies for a sort of elcrto-house drone churn in ‘Wounded Animal,’ while Sherwood rounds up with an elegiac instrumental tribute ‘Death of the Trees.’
