Boomkat Product Review:
Billed as a kind of live 'best of' collection, Lost Verses Live features a host of Kozelek classics culled from throughout his Red House painters and Sun Kil Moon discographies. Recorded at a variety of venues spread across the USA and Europe, Kozelek performs either solo or with some assistance from fellow Red House Painter Phil Carney, who supplies back-up with an extra guitar. It perhaps goes without saying, but all performances are rendered acoustically, exuding the kind of effortlessly profound moroseness that only Kozelek can, all driven by a voice that simultaneously comforts the ear and breaks your heart. Whether it's via established triumphs like the mighty 'Salvador Sanchez' or more recent works like the magnificent 'Moorestown' every track chosen for this selection feels like a thing of timeless substance. By the time Kozelek reaches his cover of 'Send In The Clowns' you'll find yourself utterly at his mercy. It's almost pornographically emotive - the sort of thing that could reduce the rowdiest and most hardened of audiences into an instant sobfest. The level of command this man has over his crowd is palpable; throughout the various reverberant halls, theatres, and even churches, there's a hushed reverence during the songs themselves (though the gaps are filled with refreshingly high-spirited banter between the singer and his congregation). To hear the marriage of Kozelek's immaculate fingerpickings and wounded-forest-animal intonations is to experience one of the most effortless and fluent examples of the art of the singer-songwriter, and Lost Verses Live captures this wonderfully well both in terms of the crisp, lively recordings and the unerring execution of it all. Highly recommended.
