Boomkat Product Review:
Ryan Gosling coaxes out the Italians Do It Better firm - Johnny Jewel, Chromatics, Symmetry, Desire, Glass Candy - for the soundtrack to his first directorial feature, Lost River, in the wake of success found with Johnny Jewel’s additions to the Drive soundtrack back in 2011.
Also crediting diagetic sounds to the film’s stars, Saoirse Ronan, Eva Mendes and Matt Smith, the Music from the Motion Picture Soundtrack is effectively a new, highly stylised IDIB album oscillating between tender pop songs, pensive synth cues, torch songs and decorous string arrangements, all gilded with Jewel’s Midas touch.
There’s not much left out from the film apart from the main dialogue, rolling out a lustrous sonic narrative which assuredly stands up as a record on its own merits.
A must-check if you were into the Cliff Martinez and Johnny Jewel score for Drive, or any of IDIB’s classic compilations and group projects.
