Exhumed from Italian DIY history, a never-before-heard cover of Liaisons Dangereuses’ calling card, and a drowsy cosmic disco wonder shed light on Nengue’s politically-activated ‘80s anti-art.
Chugy & Ziggy’s Platform 23 pull out an ace from behind the ear of Italian music history with two gems from the archive of Rome duo Alessandro “Sulu” Staro & Massimo Celestino Rufini aka Nengue. What started as an effort to reissue their 1983 compilation cut ‘African Beat’ - which sounds like a Kraftwerk doing a zonked ’Trans-Africa Express’ - turned into discovery of the band’s politically active background and an ace cover of ‘Los Niños Del Parque’, the early ‘80s German evergreen regarded as blueprint for EBM and industrial dance music. Chip in a couple remixes from Berlin’s Bionda E Lupo and Andrei Rusu and you’re looking at a tasty 12” for retro-futurists who think they herd it all, until now.
The phasing, tape-warbled cover of Liaisons Dangereuses is charming for its laggy drive and spunky vox channelling the spirit of Krishna Goineau and mucked up with cruddy FX, which is all tightened up and galvanised with extra cowbell in the ‘Neumisch’ version. The Kraftwerk on safari feel of ‘African Beat’ slots very neatly with slipstreams of Italian cosmic music, as pursued by likes of Beppe Loda and paving the way for all sorts of slowed down tackle, from Belgian new beat to Texan chopped ’n screwed and the sort of swamp beat chug of Vladimir Ivkovic, as emphasised in Andrei Rusu’s throbbing dub.
