Boomkat Product Review:
Breaking his silence, The Delgados' Alun Woodward launches a solo debut as Lord Cut-Glass following on from his old band's Universal Audio swansong of 2004. Given the scale and sonic magnitude of the music on show here, it's understandable that Woodward's been quiet over the past five years, presumably incubating ideas for tracks as knowingly inflated as the excellent 'Look After Your Wife'. The Charge Of The Light Brigade imagery on the sleeve resonates nicely with the preposterous ambitions of the album: instrumentation throughout converges on excessive grandness, though without ever being excessively earnest, always balancing his bombastic waltzes and marches with dryly witty lyrics. 'I'm A Great Example To The Dogs' is another winner, stomping through accordion-driven melodies with marching band gusto and choppy strings - it's typical of the big-band tone of the LP, which only occasionally reveals intimacy. One such instance of unguardedness comes on 'Be Careful What You Wish For', a plainly put composition about heartbreak which begins with simple piano accompaniment but can't resist expansion via a full string section and woodwind in the second half. Very lovely indeed.
