Boomkat Product Review:
Lipstick on the collar, late night house steez by a key player on disco edit whizz, Secondo’s label, What About Never - RIYL Junior Boys, Jessy Lanza, Morgan Geist
With ‘Long Time Listener First Time Caller’ Valerie from the Galerie puckers a worthy five year follow-up to the finesse of 2018’s ‘Tape One’, channelling a mood board of inspiration from “lost FM waves of talk radio, late-night Quiet Storm jams and WBLS mastermixes” into a classically dreamy, well-oiled formula of ‘80s deep house drum machine rhythms and sensuous keyboard chops, but also reserving the right to surprise.
Perfectly toned for low lit, romantic times, Valerie’s 2nd album brims with suggestive charm. ‘Flash Boys’ makes eyes at the best dancers with its clipped strut and tight melodica, next to the subtle freestyle inflections of ‘Grapefruit’, and one of a trio of slow jams, a purring ‘Lean In’, the curtain closer ‘Terrible Bad Ok Good Great’, and lip-smacking sensuality of ‘Look After Yourself’, with the tickled Linn rimshot of ‘Jimi’s Haircut’ bathed in liquid MDMA bliss, whilst ‘Low Intervention’ saves a remarkable pitch into beat-less, hair-kissing, lustrous drone for the optimal moment.
