Boomkat Product Review:
On the heels of releases from The Owl Service, Nancy Wallace and Ellen Mary McGee, Midwich present the debut from The Kittiwakes, a trio of folk singers, musicians and writers from England's South East. Lofoten Calling is a song cycle deriving its inspiration from "the people, landscape, folklore and history of the Lofoten Islands, an area above the Arctic Circle in Norway." Correspondingly, the music takes prompters from the conventions of both traditional Nordic folk as well as British influences. It's always good to hear folk musicians taking their craft as seriously as these three clearly do - there's no trend-baiting psychedelics on show here, only great musicianship, unaffected harmonised singing and writing that focuses firmly on the story at hand. Lofton Calling is one of those rare collections of new folk songs from which you can discern a genuine connection to the music's heritage, and moreover, to the myths, tales and histories surrounding its subject matter.
