Boomkat Product Review:
Limited to only 500 copies, Loco Hills is the debut LP from Brooklyn based improvisational psychedelic rock outfit Shepherds. A loose collective comprising of members from Meneguar, Woods and The Vanishing Voice, Loco Hills is the sound of four men tumbling into psych-rock foliage towards the epic and trancendent. A shifting soundscape of pre-recorded tape recordings, distorted wah guitars and tribal percusion, Shepherds debut certainly feels spontaneous. Take Endless Horizons for example, in which a primal floor tom beat waits and waits for surrounding strands of guitar and distant voices to converge which they finally do after nine and a half disorientating minutes. Think a purely instrumental Here Comes The Indian era Animal Collective fused with Explosions in the Sky's early output and you're only halfway there. Psychedelic folk impovisation is perhaps never going to appeal to the masses, but for fans of the droney, fuzz heavy Religious Knives or Godspeed You Black Emperor! at their most straight-forward, Loco Hills deserves a listen. Recommended.
