Boomkat Product Review:
DJ Guy reaches into his endless archive of offcuts for La Beauté Du Négatif. Like every DJ Guy release before it, this one sounds like the early ramblings of a bedroom producer feeling his way out on kit, trying to emulate the sounds and arrangements of other producers and hitting a gauzily derivative sound int he process.
But DJ Guy’s archive appears to be treated like some kind of collective shared memory by the labels who dip into it, each extracting their own and bathing int he shared nostalgia. The Whale Song EP drifts off on that tangent between the sloshing title track, layered up with whale song, naturally, and then the natty bogle of SXII90 Tape, which sounds like it could have come off a Shael Sound compilation, thru to the chaotic electro of BX90 Tape (Side 1) and fluffy AFXisms of BASF Ferro Extra tape Side B - Trk 4.
