Boomkat Product Review:
This third solo release by Pinback frontman Rob Crow is that rarest of things: a singer/songwriter album that seems to portray its author as actually quite happy. The cover seems to confirm this: it features Crow dossing about on his jacklantern-adorned porch (presumably it was Hallowe'en at the time of the photo shoot) whilst nonchalantly wielding a mug of coffee. It all seems a bit casual frankly, but the music is anything but. There's a sophistication to this record that's distinctly above par given its bedroom-recorded origins: 'Taste' demonstrates amply that Crow knows how to make great music under the most pared-down of circumstances, without the aid of either his Pinback bandmates or his Team Sleep and The Ladies cohort, Zach Hill (of Hella fame). In addition to having an ear for a good pop tune, Crow manages pick his way through some nifty guitar passages on 'Bam Bam'. whilst the impressive Cobain-isms of 'I Hate You, Rob Crow' finds him coming up with material that's at the very peak of his powers, managing to be as memorable as it is concise. Good stuff.
