Boomkat Product Review:
Self-released UK baaadness from Banshee, chasing up his Goon Club Allstars shot with a burning volley of grime, dembow and drill mutations
Identifying the sound of UK club music as a mutant flux of cues from Afro-Caribbean, Euro and American styles - as it’s been for decades - ‘Living In A Dream’ is exemplary of the way UK producers’ island mentality distills a singularly potent sound from mixtures of Black Atlantic and nEuro sensibilities.
The title tune locks sped-up R&B/pop vox and pizzicato strings to a tight reggaeton riddim with a cool but pent tension, and’Sky Dub’ likewise looks to early ‘90s rave templates for a moment of proper dancefloor poignance, beside the killer electroid prod of ’Niirt’ on a Paul Marmota tip. But he can barely suppress the UK aggyness in the seething slow/fast thrust of ‘Drama’, and ‘Blue Dream’ recalls DJ Nate’s knack for bending affective pop samples into shatterproof arrangements.
