Live at the Volksbühne, Berlin, New Year's Eve, 2005
Featuring selections from 'Part Two: The Endless Not' and a scattering of classics, Throbbing Gristle's New Year's Eve set is a sordid Berlin darkroom crawl delivered with a sneer.
Previously the central chapter of 'TG Berlin', a box set that assembled live and studio recordings from TG's 2005/2006 Berlin jaunt, the NYE session has now been repackaged as a proper stand-alone album, and it's worth the commotion. The band had reformed in 2004 after initially splintering in 1981, but didn't last long - Genesis P-Orridge split after only a few performances, leaving this recording as one of the most complete documents of the TG's twilight run. It's here where they debuted some of the material that'd eventually end up on 2007's 'The Endless Not': 'Rabbit Snare' is spiked with eerie Dr. Phibes organs, 'Greasy Spoon' is flushed into 'Greasy Poo' and 'Almost a Kiss' benefits from the tinny drums and angelic choral accompaniments.
But the real draw is gonna be the reduxed early material, including revamps of '20 Jazz Funk Greats' classic 'Convincing People' and 'The Second Annual Report' stand-out 'Slug Bait'. Amazingly, there's even the band's first encore of their career, a dirt-caked version of 'Hamburger Lady' that's worth the price alone.
