Boomkat Product Review:
Previously unreleased, this recording captures a 20-year-old Tim Buckley performing in front of just 35 people crowded into Izzy Young's famed Folklore Center on New York's Sixth Avenue. Buckley performs songs from his eponymous debut album and the yet-to-be-recorded Goodbye And Hello album, all captured with an entirely surprising level of clarity (probably creditable to the work of Grammy-winning mastering engineers Steve Rosenthal, Warren Russell-Smith and Jamie Howarth). Buckley's still burgeoning talent is heard over fifty-five minutes of other-worldly, occasionally theatrical vocals and beguiling guitar playing that ranges from masterful fingerpicking to billowing, strumming rampages. Brilliant renderings of 'Phantasmagoria In Two', 'I Never Asked To Be Your Mountain' and the opening 'Song For Janie' are among the highlights, and undoubtedly, any established fans of Buckley's painfully shortened career will find much to pour over here. The accompanying booklet supplies new liner notes by Izzy Young, plus an unpublished interview with Buckley conducted a couple of weeks after the concert itself was held. Recommended.
