Recorded at Los Angeles rehearsal space Spiral House, Nicolás Jaar and Dave Harrington's latest live album is their first to include drummer Tlacel Esparza, who wakes up the duo's dubby, cross-genre freakouts with kinetic, mutating rhythms.
'Live at Spiral House' is Darkside's second live album, and the trio rattle through a selection of their well-known tracks from 2013's 'Psychic' and 2021's 'Spiral', infusing them with new energy thanks to Esparza's percussion. 'Liberty Bell' for example has transformed from a motorik, chugging monster into something more country-flecked and freeform, and 'Freak, Go Home' has its rattly beatbox rhythms fleshed out by Esparza's chirpy rolls, pushing it closer to Silver Apples' eccentric electronic pop.
New track 'Dream (interlude)' is one of the album's highlights, a jazzy improvised guitar and electric piano jam that's anchored by Esparza's pots 'n pans whirr. If you're into Darkside's particular brand of psychedelic dub rock, then it's only gotten better.
