Rob Mazurek, Exploding Star Orchestra
Live At Adler Planetarium
Recorded at Chicago's Adler Planetarium, this one features improv-heavy re-interpretations of tracks from the band's 'Lightning Dreamers' full-length.
Best known for his work with Chicago outfits like Gastr Del Sol, Tortoise and Isotope 217, Mazurek is basically a local hero, despite being born and raised in New Jersey. His Adler Planetarium set last year was special because it was his first Chicago show in over five years, and he knew it had to be special. So he used the space to project his cosmic visuals - made from improvised electronic music, no less - while the band performed.
For this performance, the Exploding Star Orchestra was an eight-piece, featuring Nicole Mitchell on flute, voice and electronics, Damon Locks on voice, samplers and electronics, Tomeka Reid on cello and electronics, Craig Taborn and Angelica Sanches on electric piano and Moog, Ingebrigt Håker Flaten on bass, and Chad Taylor and Gerald Cleaver on drums. And they interpret 'Lightning Dreamers' with style, advancing Miles Davis's 'Bitches Brew' template in the process.
