Boomkat Product Review:
This live document comes as a belated follow-up to the album Romance, in which Mike Patton teamed up with Norwegian soundtrack composer John Erik Kaada for a highly compelling meeting of styles. Patton's dextrous, eccentric vocal melds into the eerie Kaada soundscape making a kind of awkward sense. This live concert film captures a full-band line-up live at Roskilde 2005, with the whole ensemble smartly decked-out in '50's style suits and cast in a creepy black & white, there's something faintly surreal, and Lynchian about it all. The music has an overwhelmingly macabre feel to it, straddling lounge lizard instrumentation and retro horror flick harmonies, and in a live context all this becomes very cabaret, resulting in an overall audio-visual experience that's even more peculiar than the original collaborative album. The inner workings of the collaboration are unveiled with a short film capturing the band during rehearsals for the show, which makes for a decent accompanying extra feature.
