Boomkat Product Review:
Making their third entry in the VHF catalogue, Spiral Joy Band embark on a witchy, drone-folk opus that's riddled with screeching, intersecting violins and uneasy micro-intervals. As free and wild as this music tends to be, you never get the sense that the band is out of control and just blindly, uninsightfully slashing at their instruments. The title track in particular reveals a carefully poised rewrite of Appalachian folk, blurring ancient rural melodies with a jarring avant-garde temperament. 'Tolling Over The Rocks' shifts into a more meditative mode, merging seaside field recordings with gentle gong drones, and bringing the album to a pleasingly reposeful finale.
