Boomkat Product Review:
For Aidan Baker's first solo release on Alien8 Recordings (a label that has already put out three albums by Baker's band, Nadja plus a Tim Hecker collaboration), the composer/musician recruits a wealth of additional players from bands like Picastro, Forest City Lovers, Arc, Whisper Room and Knurl. The first of the two long-tform compositions here is 'Liminoid', an intense four-part work that taps into drone and avant-rock, with outbursts of vocal elements based on 5th-8th century Coptic Christian texts. 'Lifeforms' feels like a more solid piece of work, composed for strings, prepared guitar and amplified metals. Combining pre-written material with improvised performance, 'Lifeforms' verges nicely on a state of unkemptness whilst maintaining some semblance of structural formality - largely thanks to deep, resonant drone sonorities running through the piece, leaving the violinist and cellist to float freely within the soundscape. Given the heavy, brooding feel of 'Liminoid', this half-hour counterpart piece seems all the more poised and authoritative.
