Boomkat Product Review:
A favourite of Aaliyah, Bowie, and D’Angelo, Lewis Taylor’s sorely overlooked, eponymous debut resurfaces for a necessary 25th anniversary reissue
Dripping with neo soul, ‘Lewis Taylor’ arrived to critical acclaim on Island in 1996, but somehow slipped under the radar, despite its celebrity accolades. Its token original vinyl pressing is now understandably a pricey 2nd hand buy, so Be With Records have mercifully stepped in to give it a new life on wax, spreading its 10 tracks over a 2LP cut for optimal immersion in its opulent production.
It’s not hard to hear why the album struck a chord with its notable fans; the killer downstroke and layered harmonies of Aaliyah fave ‘Whoever’ are clearly shades away from her seminal sound, while the likes of ‘Betterlove’ share much in common with D’Angelo’s sultry bedroom styles. The whole thing is just utterly timeless, and could have feasibly come out at almost any point between the ‘70s and now.
