Apparently Axxon used to be a duo, but on ‘Let’s Get It Straight’ the lineup has been pared down to simply include Aussie bloke Tom Hall. I suppose this is a solo project now, but you’d be hard pressed to work that out from that sounds – Hall has injected enough of his sprawling influences over the course of the album you might think it was the work of a church congregation. The pervading mood is electronic, but this is flecked with noise, industrial, techno, classical, folk, rock and who knows what else. While this might sound like an all-you-can-hear buffet, there is a surprising coherence to the tracks on Let’s Get It Straight. Hall has his sounds in check, and when dragging us through his wide-reaching mind he has enough forethought to make the tunes somehow flow into each other with ease. It almost reminds me of a long-forgotten cassette mix, dug up from the back of a cupboard somewhere and finding a home once more.
