Les Fleurs was Martin Juhls’ second album for the City Centre Offices label, and emerged back in 2006. Now Juhls has revisited the record, and comes assisted by Anwar Alam and Jan-Philipp Alam on violin who give the original album’s sample-based sound a level of gravitas that is difficult to achieve using mere electronics. Juhls’ expert manipulations and treatments work to balance the violins with an almost Zen-like harmony. Familiar phrases erupt like old friends and then disappear in the echoing string sections. ‘Les Fleurs Variations’ is a markedly more minimal work than its predecessor; it sounds older and wiser somehow. As Juhls has grown and pondered the record it sounds like he has stripped down far more than he has ended up adding, and the result is a haunting and skeletal piece of classical ambience. Good references would Harold Budd or early Brian Eno, as both these artists share Juhls’ stark use of space and silence. If ever there were music for quiet meditation, this would be it. Highly recommended.
