Key club label Numbers. kick off their ’24 with a squirming bag of techno missiles and synth-pops by Jesper Nørbaek’s Hekt, ft. guest chops by cunty kween JZ Prodigy and longtime foils Smerz.
Previously known as Code Walk on Peder Mannerfelt’s eponymous label, Copenhagen’s Nørbaek mints the Hekt alias with a distinctly playful lash of six tracks skooled in CPH’s feted club scene - running from high velocity techno to squeaky synth-pop resonating SOPHIE’s classic turns on the label. All very characteristic of Numbers.’ role as ringleaders of the Glasgow club sound they’ve shepherded and spread around the world over the past 15 years and more.
On a highlight ‘ID’ Hekt links with Norwegian lasses Smerz after producing a pair of their singles, resulting a pounding, playful fusion of donk hop and synth-pop ditty, while ballroom heavyweight JZ Prodigy lights up the ruddy ’Sync’ with a sort of fast-rap take on hip-house. The big one for DJs is ‘Main Tab’ with its hip-shot laser stabs sprayed over cold-tuned kicks and ‘tronics, beside its more gurning mirror image in ‘Setup’, and the tactile definition and drive of ‘Rip’ warrants comparison with SOPHIE, especially cuts off the ‘OOEPUI’ remix album.
