At the turn of the millennium, a slew of artists were looking to bring classical soundscapes into a new age. Chauveau's technique differed from his peers, especially in the early years - he'd been a member of French post-rock band Micro:Mega, and his interest in music was always wide and varied. On 'Le livre noir du capitalisme' he melted classical motifs with jazzy, gallic experiments, gaseous electronics and Talk Talk-like pastoral riffs. It's still his most ambitious, most widescreen set, and we're glad to see it available once more after years out of print.
Smoky, melancholy piano compositions like 'JLG', 'Le marin rejeté par la mer' and 'Mon royaume' are peppered between far more unexpected productions. 'Hurlements en faveur de Serge T.', for example is closer to Barry Adamson or Angelo Badalamenti, with swingy, downtempo electronic beats and dialog samples, and 'Dialogues avec le vent' betrays Chauveau's post-rock roots, matching feathery guitar plucks with the composer's sugar-sweet vocals. On 'Ma contribution à l’industrie phonographique', it sounds as if Chauveau is filtering the remnants of an old baroque 78 through a vast, metallic chamber, and on the stand-out 'Je suis vivant et vous êtes morts', he sets disquieting synth tones against what sounds like a ticking clock and heavy breathing - Lynch would be proud.
