Boomkat Product Review:
Sub Rosa summon a decade of personalised solo piano and chamber nocturnes composed by Petr Bakla and performed by close collaborator Miroslav Beinhauer with the Brno Contemporary Orchestra
The hour long expo ’Late Night Show’, Petr Bakla’s 3rd album since 2016, centres the Czech composer’s ability to wrest a witching hour uncanniness from relatively basic elements. Heralded as “so specific and personal, so allergic to fashion or aesthetic trend” in Eric Wubbels’ liner notes, the three pieces, written and recorded between 2013 and 2012, deploy fundamental, chromatic, whole-tone scales in beguiling forms, most apparent on the contrast of his MC Escher staircase of ascending scales and descending notes underlined with chamber strings in ‘Piano Concerto No.2’ (2021), and quizzical exploration of conventions in ‘Major Thirds’ (2013), thru to lower register mystery of ’No. 4’ (2013).
