Boomkat Product Review:
A third full-length from the acclaimed quartet formed by Wire's Colin Newman, Robin Rimbaud (aka Scanner), Malka Spigel and Max Franken. Landing continues to exploit driving, krautrock-inspired rhythms, but there's a deeper, textural element to these motorik grooves, checking in with reverberant, effects-swaddled guitars and an aloof vocal (from Spigel) that immediately invites Laetitia Sadier comparisons. Structurally this music is far more minimal and stripped down than Stereolab though, peaking with tracks like 'Take Off' and the shoegazing 'Lightswimmer'. Incisive melodies are hardly the central concern here, though on a piece like 'From My Perspective' there's enough going on to stick in the memory. Far more important to this record's constitution is a tightly pinned down rhythm section and swirling space-rock production touches that elevate the songs beyond monotonous exercises in plain old repetition.
