Boomkat Product Review:
France’s Fabrizio Rat furnishes Optimo Trax with a quartet of prepared piano-plus-drum machine jackers.
He’s not the only one doing this sound - there’s a good handful of young Europeans with high cheekbones, floppy hair and cashmere vests doing this kinda thing - but the La Machina EP feels more direct and sexy than any of them (who’re clearly so interesting that we can’t remember their names).
Up top he prods the ‘floor with uptempo techno groove and garrotting, slicing string tension in Pinky beside the jagged, monotone staccato and offset lurch of Ring; the flip side takes a shadier contour with the precise, swinging groove and brusque clip of Index and the droning dark room canter of Thumb.
Bet his mother is glad those piano lessons went to good use…
