Boomkat Product Review:
For their second album for Staubgold, this Austrian ensemble explore the connecting points between western experimental music and what they term 'oriental art music'. The resultant cultural melting pot brings together traditional Eastern instrumental disciplines and subtle electronic interventions. Vocalist Zohreh Jooya is a renowned interpreter of traditional Afghan and Iranian music and fronts these tracks, combining with oud grandmaster Asim Al-Chalabi. 'Volkische' best exemplifies the successes of this album: it's a romantic folk piece beautifully cluttered with all manner of digital debris and glitch edits, whilst the instrumental 'Ayn', featuring Violist Eyvind Kang (of Tzadik fame) gives presents a very different, more openly experimental side to the band. Recommended.
