Boomkat Product Review:
These days best known as one of the Constellation label's key acts, Hrsta released their debut album via Fancy and Alien8 Recordings. Central to Hrsta is Mike Moya, a member of Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Set Fire To Flames and Molasses, who for this outing shapes his guitar and other bits and pieces (like organ, tape loops, melodica, kazoo and various bowed objects) into richly atmospheric vistas, alternating between soundtrack-like instrumental compositions and songs with a cinematic sheen comparable to Calexico. Assisting Moya are several bandmates taking time out from the myriad Montreal post-rock acts listed above, who considerably add to the vibrancy of the album by contributing drums, cello, and in the case of Molasses' Fluffy Erskine, even a bit of saw. Moya proves himself a songwriter of some merit on pieces such as 'City Of Gold', but reveals a more experimental side too, proving himself equally adept on extended, majestic drones like 'Silver Planes'. Highly recommended.
