Krautrock Eruption – An Introduction To German Electronic Music 1970-1980
Bureau B capably provide a soundtrack to Wolfgang Seidel's upcoming corrective alternate history of Krautrock with tracks from Cluster, Faust, Conrad Schnitzler, Asmus Tietchens and others.
One of the world's most misunderstood genres, Krautrock is a constant source of disagreement - which is exactly why Seidel felt like he needed to dispel many of the genre's widely-repeated myths. Thankfully, he supplements the text with a list of 50 essential records, which is the pool for this fantastic 12-track anthology. And it's not like any Krautrock compilation you might have heard before; clearly, if you're up to snuff with your research or have combed through Julian Cope's Krautrocksampler, you'll know plenty of this stuff, but we can't think of a better starting point for newcomers. Schnitzler, Dieter Moebius and Hans-Joachim Roedelius are very well represented, with various solo and ensemble offerings, including 'Foreign Affairs' from Cluster and Eno, and a nippy edit of Kluster's 'Kluster 2 (Electric Music)' that shows the genre at its most improv-heavy.
Of course, no good Krautrock intro could leave out Faust, whose 'Faust Tapes' highlights 'I’ve Heard That One Before' and 'Watch Your Step' are condensed into a single track. But there's also lesser-known gems like Harald Grosskopf's cosmic groover 'Emphasis', from 1980's 'Synthesist', and underrated genius Asmus Tietchens' dramatic 'Falter-Lamento'. We can only assume that the Ash Ra Tempel and Tangerine Dream estates weren't interested in licensing any material - still, this one's the gift to hand over to yer Can and Neu!-obsessed mates.
