Boomkat Product Review:
*Includes two newly remastered Fela albums in one package* Documenting the early years of Fela's long and influential canon. 'Koola Lobitos 64-68' features Fela leading a collection of highlife aces recorded with his new band upon returning from his studies in London. Tony Allen drumming and Fela's charismatic vocals and trumpet begins to change the popular highlife-jazz sound into what would become known as Afro-beat. The transformation is nearing completion in the ten tracks of his ''69 L.A. Sessions', riding heavier grooves and with horns influenced more by funk, soul and latin jazz than the sound back in Nigeria, while Tony Allen's drumming melds R&B, jazz and highlife to an insoluble new pattern. Classic stuff.
