Boomkat Product Review:
Kinshasa, DRC’s Konono Nº1 fuse with Portugal’s Batida ensemble for a compelling, hybrid follow-up to Assume Crash Position (2010), but sadly, without their founder, Mingiedi Mawangu who died in 2015, aged 85. RIP.
However, in 2009 Mawangu entrusted his band leader role to his son, Augustin Makuntima Mawangu, who comfortably fills his father’s boots and thumb piano duties here, reprising the band’s relationship with Crammed Records’ Vincent Kenis (a.k.a. half of Aksak Maboul, fact fans) for a signature, irresistible, if subtly augmented sound.
