Boomkat Product Review:
Thee Silver Mount Zion Memorial Orchestra return with another mighty volume of dramatically charged, non-more epic post-rock for Constellation. As time goes on it seems more and more the case that band leader Efrim Menuck leads the band into a realm that's all their own, where musical language is as skewed and personalised as the English language that's so liberally abused for the track titles. The tone shifts between highly accomplished neo-classical passages and furious blues rock, with Menuck's lead guitar dipped deeply in honeyed fuzz. Of course, to some extent followers of Godspeed and A Silver Mount Zion will know what to expect from this band, and liberal usage of 7/4 time signatures and influences that flit "from afrobeat to bouzouki music to hard bop to punk rock" are virtually commonplace in their discography, but here they sound as vital and motivated as ever.
