Knew Abloom (Life's Hood)
Another top class Holy Mountain jaunt, this time from drummer Zac Nelson, a veteran of various Illinois bands whose solo work transcends all reasonable categorization. At its most accessible, this stuff could fit in with the paw Tracks crew, and the more out-there end of Animal Collective's output, but on cuts like 'Smack Of Dawn (Mourning Slaps Son Silly)' you'll find adventurous percussion thrown in with childlike electronic faffing and crazy-guy-in-the-park witterings. Also, if Nelson's press photo is anything to go by, he does his clothes shopping at the same outlet as Moondog, so he won't be scoring himself many sanity points off the back of all this. Despite, or possibly because of this eccentricity, tracks like 'Patient As Sugar' and 'Grizzly Bear With Me' sound pretty unique in their composition: the former being a jazzy synth and drums jam, that's effectively a crescendo from its very start, while the latter shapes up as a clamorous harpsichord piece with unintelligible ranting taped over the top. By no means an easy ride this, but it's hugely inventive and showcases Nelson's unique creative voice.
