Kitsuné Tabloid by Phoenix
Taking a very different angle to the label's norm, this latest Kitsune Tabloid release comes courtesy of the obscenely underrated Phoenix, the Parisian band who've been diligently making brilliant albums for the past nine years or so. This mixtape-style compilation documents some of the band's influences, taking in a diverse set of artists including Roxy Music, The Red Crayola, Tangerine Dream, D'Angelo and 13th Floor Elevators. The playlist does a great job of balancing the overall tone of the release, setting aside time for hard-rocking trifles like Kiss' ace 'Love Theme From Kiss' as well as big weepy numbers like Dusty Springfield's sublime 'I Think It's Gonna Rain Today' or Elvis Costello's own take on 'Shipbuilding', the song made famous by Robert Wyatt. The selection here is incontrovertibly bang on-the-money, checking in with Big Star's Chris Bell, Chicago doo-wop group The Impressions and Irma Thomas in an unceasing procession of auditory goodness, plus there are classics from far-out each Boy Dennis Wilson and Lou Reed, whose eleven-minute 'Street Hassle' suite closes this splendid selection. An obvious comparison to make with this would be Air's LateNightTales set - there's a similarly eclectic and exquisitely tasteful curatorial ear at work here too.
