Boomkat Product Review:
A very poppy outing for Creeping Bent, this debut album from Scottish band The Magic Circles lives up to the Byrds, Lovin' Spoonful and Go-Betweens references made on its release notes, cramming itself with chiming 12-string Rickenbacker melodies and as many vocal harmonies as the choruses will hold. It has to be said, the production is at best dryly efficient, not really doing the songs any favours, and strewn across the record are some of the most straight-up pub rock guitar solos to be found anywhere in indiedom - although perhaps that's a trend-defying attribute to be admired to some extent. Melodically these songs do enough to elevate themselves above the everyday and what they lack in 21st century innovation they certainly make up for in twangy tunefulness.
