Boomkat Product Review:
Pheno S, "the BasedGod of the Sahel" follows up his appearance on 'Music From Saharan Cellphones 2' with, 'Kani', a full album of colourful, spaced-out hip hop and Afro-futuristic dance anthems. The production palette is practically entirely electronic and Pheno's rapped and sung vocals are irresistibly autotuned to delicious effect throughout. Styles range from the swaying tropical R&B bob of 'Alazalika' and the hot 'n heavy bounce of 'Wangaro' to more uptempo styles with the free-floating 140bpm bounce of 'Bomber' with it's sublime string runs and cosmic synth shackled to a militant snare patter whilst Pheno and pals alternate between hysterics and barking around his sweetened croon, or equally the softer bass percolations and effervescent vocals of 'Souroulouklouk' with it's infectious syncopation seared by lush synthlines and '80s electro stabs. It's a big look!
