Boomkat Product Review:
Jack Sheen - an affiliate of MCR's Slip label - makes his solo recording debut with a suite of percussive studies forming the O.S.T. for George Haydock's short film, 'Jupiter'.
Drawing upon a wide range of compositional strategies from experimental jazz, concrète and modern classical, the highly praised yung composer (and conductor, among other things) reflects and refracts the film's surreal celestial themes and narrative arc with a spacious constellation of tribal texturhythms, tonal roil and smeared drones derived from a palette of struck, bowed and sampled drums.
The results range from coruscating shimmers recalling Michael Ranta's percussive meditations, thru to urgent swells redolent of Mike Weis' trio of solo LPs, and pointillist technique nodding at William Winant's seminal avant-garde interpretations, yet, where all the aforementioned tend to stretch out, Sheen's pieces are cut concise and precise with microcosmic dynamics.
