Boomkat Product Review:
Latest from Doug Aitken's Station to Station: A 30 Day Happening at the Barbican.
On June 30th former Black Dice drummer, Hisham Akira Bharoocha met London-based discombobulation, patten to record this contrasting suite of improvisations. On side one, hundreds of environmental sounds, including exhibited works, the vinyl pressing plant, near silent electrical hum and ambient chatter of visitors, were collected on-site using hand-held digital recorders, with the fragmented results used as a bed for Bharoocha's flurries of breakbeats and loose limbed, yet disciplined, improvisations in seven prismatic pieces.
On side two, we find an unplanned improvisation of chiming, rhythmelodic, Reichian percussion and keys, recorded in one take at the studio in the centre of the gallery as a precursor to commencing the field recordings.
