Wickedly grubby beatdown with a metallic soul right on the weird and noisy biting point, by South Londoner Moroka for Amsterdam’s occasional Fine Grains Records.
Seemingly outta nowhere (to be fair he dropped the ‘Trails’ tape in 2018), or Loughborough Junction to be precise, Moroka plies an accomplished brand of machine made ruggedness on all eight counts of ‘Junction Tape’. Oriented somewhere between liminal machine funk styles emerging from Lord Tusk, Brassfoot, and the murky ends of 5GT, he goes tuff and funky in-the-pocket on grooves that threaten to best at the seams from their skudgy overproof funk.
They’re all bitesize morsels, but pack enough gristle and flavour to sate the best leftfield ‘floors, running the voodoo down with a salty soul in ‘Machines Don’t Loiter’, beside the smudged offbeat slugger ’Sovereign’, a killer sort of grandfather clock swagger in ‘The Ich’, and psychoactive DJ Screw styles in ‘Massify my Love’, plus the knotted trotter ‘Tired With You’, and Philip Jeck-via-Lukid alike warped textures of ‘A Warm Grey’.
Canny heads know the steez.
